Attraction of mekong delta

Can Tho is 170 km from Saigon.. The city, with an estimated population of 1,121,000 (2004), is the biggest city in the Mekong Delta. It is 138.960 ha.The city is located on the south bank of Hau Giang, the bigger branch of the Mekong River. Can Tho’s climate is tropical and monsoonal with two seasons: rainy (May to November) and dry (December to April). Average annual humidity is 83 percent, rainfall 1,635 mm, and temperature 27 °C.

Vietnam has two big deltas, the Red River delta in the North, and the Mekong in the South (this Mekong delta region is formed by the various tributaries of the mighty Mekong River which begins its journey to the sea in Tibet and winds its way for 4500 km through China, Burma, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Southern Vietnam). Mekong is Cuu Long in Vietnamese which means "nine dragons" and this is represented by the nine exit points of the Mekong River as it flows into the sea. , it produces enough rice to feed the entire country with a sizeable surplus leftover.

Since the beginning, Can Tho was already given the title Tay Do or Western Capital. Administratively, Can Tho City constitutes an independent municipality at the same level as Vietnam’s provinces. It was created in the beginning of 2004 by a split of the former Can Tho Province into two new administrative units: Can Tho City and Hau Giang Province.

Can Tho is a busy port capable of accommodating large ships from neighboring countries. Hau Giang or Hau River is the main channel that passes through Can Tho. The land mass surrounding the river was developed very early so the population in this area is probably the largest in all of the Delta region. The land here is said to be the most fertile because of the deposits from the various branches of the river.

Today, it has become centre of economy, culture, science and technology

Highlights

Ben Ninh Kieu (Ninh Kieu Wharf): is probably the most well known landmark in Can Tho. The port lies on Hau Giang and crosses the city of Can Tho. The city opens to the water front where port Ninh Kieu is the focal point of all activities on the river. Frequent ferries carry passengers to Xom Chai island, just a short distance away and a beautiful sight at sunset.

Cai Rang floating market is situated about 8 km from Can Tho by road or a 20 km loop by boat. This market is quite nice and sells a variety of fruit and vegetables and operates from 5 am to 11 am, though the markets are better the earlier you can get there. A Cyclo from Can Tho will take about 15 minutes to get to Cai Rang Market. Another market, Phung Hiep market, is 31 km from Can Tho. This is the snake market, selling a plethora of living, wriggling and often poisonous snakes. Pythons and Cobras are sold here by people from the countryside who have caught them by hand, whilst others have come to purchase snakes for restaurants, medicinal reasons or personal consumption. This market is open from 5 am to 5 pm. If traveling by boat, you can add a dimension to your day by stopping and visiting some of the fruit gardens, which sell pineapple, rambutan and papaya amongst many other fruits.

Can Tho Tourist Gardens :
In recent years, a series of modern tourism gardens have appeared on every land and water route in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho. The gardens of My Khanh, San Duong, Ba Lang and Tan Binh extend along the arched highway, as well as on the waterways of Hong Dien and Phung Hiep rivers. Other gardens in Long My, Vi Thanh, O Mon and Thot Not are also developing.

The My Khanh Gardens occupy 2.2 ha and feature more than 20 species of fruit trees and flowers, as well as diverse species of birds, fish, tortoises, snakes, crabs and shrimp. Under the shade of lush green trees, there are small rong houses to provide visitors with a place to rest for the night.

Ba Lang is located 9 km from Can Tho (on Highway No. 1 towards Soc Trang), and has an area of 4.2 ha. There is the animal sanctuary of Ao Sen Lake, two lakes for swimming, an outdoor stage and mini-hotels. Gardens here combine agricultural potential with tourism.

CHAU DOC-MEKONG DELTA

Brief history

Chau Doc is river city close to the Cambodia border. The town is located on the right bank of Hau Giang. Here is the second centre of culture and commerce of An Giang province. Chau Doc is 100 sq km.

With a population of 85000, Chau Doc is a bustling city with the heavy trade of illegal goods crossing the Cambodian border.

It became part of Vietnam in the middle of the 18th century as a gift, a reward for helping the Cambodian monarch to put down an insurrection .

In 1815, King Nguyen make construct here a citadel. In 1834, under King Minh Mang, it was destroyed and reconstructed in form of eight – sigh figure.

In the revolution against the French, this area was chose as main front in the Mau Than campaign (in spring 1968).

Nowadays, Chau Doc is a interesting destination.

Because of its source from Cambodia, it has a high proportion of ethnic Khmer people among the population here, easily identifiable by their darker skins and a chequered scarf instead of Vietnamese ubiquitous conical hat.

There’s also a number of ethnic Cham and Chinese people here. So what makes Chau Doc interesting is it’s mix of communities.

Highlights

·   Mountain Sam: located 5km from the town, this is the highest point on the delta. This mountain gets the name from its shape of a king crab, which is “Sam” in Vietnamese. It is a “holy” mountain for more than 100 pagodas and temples. The most significant in religious terms in the Ba Chua Xu, dedicated to the “Lady of the Region”. Her festival is held in the spring. It attracts huge numbers of devotees and, of course, swarms of vendors hoping to make a killing.

·   Tay An pagoda: It’s architecture is influenced by Hindu and Islamic style, which is a bit fanciful.

·   Mam:  type of fermented fish used regularly as food ingredients of garnishes

·   A highlight of a visit to Chau Doc is a boat trip on one of the small paddle boats that collect near the western end of the park

·   Cham village: Crossing the river you reach a Cham village ( Chau Giang ) where there are Muslims and you can see the Mosque and how different are the dressings and ways of living of this people
